She learned the river’s riddles before she learned her letters. The first bargain she ever struck was for her own name.

02What it does

Names that land in your novel project

01

Names in your novel project

You are not stuck on a throwaway results page. After you sign in, Muses sends your request to the AI inside a new novel project, with folders for Characters, Worldbuilding and Story Outline already waiting.

02

A short reason with each name

Muses asks the AI for a short reason with each name. Weigh sound, meaning and feel before you commit, then ask for another batch, a softer set, or names that fit a culture you named in your notes.

03

Keep favorites in Characters

When a name fits, write it into Characters yourself and keep drafting. The same chat can help with backstory, voice or the scene where that character first appears.

03FAQ

Questions about this character name generator

What happens after I pick a type?

Sign in or create an account, and Muses opens a new novel project with folders for Worldbuilding, Characters, Story Outline and References. Your type and notes are already in the chat, beside a blank draft: Muses has sent them to the AI as a request for twelve original names, each with a short reason. To steer the AI, say what you want next in the chat.

Do I need an account? What does it cost?

You can choose a type and write notes here before signing in; you’ll need an account to open the project and generate names. The free plan includes a monthly AI allowance, and paid plans include more. The Pricing page has current details for each plan.

Will the names go into my character sheet?

Muses asks the AI to list the names in the chat, so that part is up to you: put the ones you like into the Characters folder yourself, or ask the AI to help draft a short note for a name you kept. The same chat stays open so you can refine a name before you write it into Characters.

Can I ask for elf, dragon or witch names?

Yes. Those are types on this page, not separate URLs. Pick Elf, Dragon or Witch, add notes if you want a culture or sound, and generate in the same novel project.

Can I ask for names inspired by a book, film or game?

Yes. Mention it in your notes, along with what you like about its names: the sounds, the culture, the mood. The request Muses sends for you asks for original names; when your notes point to names from existing books, films or games, it asks the AI to offer original ones instead. After that, tell the AI in the chat which way to go: closer to that sound, or further from it.

Can my novel be in another language?

Yes. The AI answers in the language you write to it in. Your chat opens with a request in English, so write any notes in your book’s language and say which language the names should fit. The Muses interface itself comes in nine languages.

Who owns the names, and is my writing used to train AI?

You do. Under Muses’ terms, what you write stays yours, and so does the text the AI writes for you. Muses does not use your writing or your conversations to train AI models. If you’d rather the Muses team didn’t review your AI conversations to improve the product, turn off “Allow conversation review” in your Profile.
