Good opening. One thing to settle before I draft, because it decides where the story goes:

Who wrote the letter?
Story Draft
The letter came on Tuesday with the supply boat. It was the only one in the bag, addressed in her own hand, down to the habitual hook she gave the last stroke of every T.
She read it three times. It said not to light the lamp tonight, whatever happened, and it was dated tomorrow, which she stared at for a long time without understanding.
One line: Do not light the lamp tonight. Dated tomorrow.
Before dark she climbed to the lamp room anyway. Her hand hovered over the switch, colder than the paper.
The first three paragraphs are in the draft. It’s yours to change, line by line.
Make the second paragraph colder. Explain less.
Paragraph two is down to one line; the cut explanation is marked in the text. Accept or reject, your call.
